US - THE BAND

Who are we? We are US! There are millions of US here in the U.S.! We are a family. We are Americans. We are patriotic. We love our country. But we are troubled. We are dismayed. We are confused. We don't like what has been happening here and we don't quite know what to do about it.

Truth, Justice, and the American Way. That's what Superman fought for. That's what America is supposed to stand for. Truth. Justice. Equality. High ideals. Principles that so many brave souls have fought and died for. But Truth and Justice seem to be in pretty short supply in America these days.

What are we to make of our current "leaders"? Who treat the truth as though it is some kind of plaything to be manipulated at will? Who lie shamelessly to their citizens and to the world, and start wars based on those lies in which tens of thousands are killed, and countless billions are spent which only enrich the corporations profiting from the conflict? And who are working to undermine and roll back all the progressive and democratic advances made in the last 50 years? Unions. Workers' rights. Health care. Womens' rights. Gay rights. Protecting the environment. Individual liberties. Yes... even fair and verifiable elections! The list goes on and on. If you are one of US, you are definitely concerned!

And what are we to make of our media? Who are seemingly so under the thumb of the power structure that they don't even dare to question, let alone hold accountable, the government for its highly unethical activities? A free press is supposed to be one of the checks and balances on a free society. But freedom of the press now seems to be kind of a "selective" thing; they cover what they choose (or are told) to cover, while ignoring important stories that would surely make a difference in public opinion. Since the deregulation of the media, the control of information has increasingly become concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. This is highly alarming to US!

And the rise of religious fundamentalism! How can this be happening? How, in a country that leads the world in technological advances, can such a large segment of the population be held under the sway of ultraconservative zealots who have subverted Jesus' message of peace and love into one of intolerance, fear and hatred? Who exhort their followers to ignore science, reality and even common sense if it contradicts their blind faith in Old Time Religion? And who want to legislate laws which will impose their morality, their beliefs, their prejudices, on the rest of US? Is that what America is all about?

US - THE BAND says NO!! And we want to help. But how? We are not politicians. What can a little family like ours do to change the situation? We can write songs. And we can play music. And we can try to bring people together. Music has the power to unite people by expressing the hopes, dreams, and feelings of all.

Join US. Stand with US. And maybe together we can make a difference. After all, they can't debate a song...particularly if EVERYBODY is singing it!!
