HOW DID THIS COUNTRY GET SO BAD? (I 1 2 NO)

First of all, we are asking this question because we love our country! But, yeah. How could all this be happening? How did we get to this place? This is America! The greatest country in the world, or so we are told. So we have grown up believing. So how can it be that so many people here are just plain stupid? That they can't see that our so-called leaders have sold the American people a bill of goods? How can it be that the Republicans and their power machine have been able to get away with everything from election fraud to lying about WMD to illegally spying on citizens to taking billions in bribes from lobbyists whose mission is to get Congress to pass laws that enable the big corporations to rip off the American people? Why do we allow their greed to go unchecked? It's a big question...but WE 1 2 NO!

I was sitting around and pondering matters various and sundry
And I'm seriously wondering what has happened to our country
How did this country get so bad now
How did this country get so bad
How did this country get so bad now I 1 2 no!
The President and all his men are such a bunch of liars
You couldn't get the truth from them if you had a pair of pliers
(chorus)
They start a war against Iraq 'cause of mass destructive weapons
When they didn't find a single thing they said "Oh well, shit happens"
(chorus)
When George Bush got religion a heavenly message he was sent
To give a trillion dollars back to the upper one percent
Some 40 million people here ain't got no health insurer
But the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer
(chorus)
We tell the world we're going to give them true democracy
But the only thing that they perceive is our hypocrisy
George Bush he went to Russia, told them they should be more democratic
But Putin said to Bush shut up, 'cause we know what's in your attic
(chorus)
His re-election strategy was crafty, mean and three-fold
Suppress the vote, screw minorities, and machines all run by Diebold
The exit polls on election night said that Kerry was the winner
But Americans don't give a damn, they're too busy eating dinner
(chorus)
The corporations own the radio, newspapers and TV station
They tell you what they want you to know, they control the information
If you want to believe the media has all the best intention
Then ask them to report the truth about the things they never mention
(chorus)
All the other countries of the world went and signed the Kyoto treaty
America's the only one that decided to be greedy
They don't want a woman's right to choose or gay people to marry
Or for you to know they're stealing all the cash that they can carry
(chorus)
The born agains think the world soon ends in a flaming Armageddon
They might as well dig a great big hole and stick their stupid head in
If you don't believe in karma and you don't believe in love
Then the only thing left to believe in is push and shove

BUSH SMELL FUNNY
This song was inspired by a quote from Jesse Jackson after the 2004 election. He said that indications of voting fraud in Ohio and Florida were so prevalent that this election just "didn't pass the smell test". He went on to say that "U.S. citizens had as much reason as those in Kiev (Ukraine) to be concerned that the fix was in.” Anyway, there are a lot of things Bush has said and done that just SMELL FUNNY! We would like to make it clear to all FBI and/or NSA personnel that the words to this song refer to his words and actions... not the man personally. I am reasonably sure that he showers regularly. Probably even uses cologne. But what he has done definitely smells like something dead. 2400 soldiers and counting. That's what I said.

Bush smell funny
Like a rotten egg
Like a pile of garbage
Like something dead
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

Bush smell funny
Kinda makes me sick
All the lyin and cheatin
And dirty tricks
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

Bush smell funny
And Cheney too
And Rumsfeld also
Will make you say "P-U!"
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

Bush smell funny
If you really think
About the situation
It starts to stink
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

Bush smell funny
Like meat done spoiled
Like a whole world fighting
For a tank of oil
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

Bush smell funny
Like a rotten egg
Like a pile of garbage
Like something dead
Bush smell funny
Like a pile of money
Like something dead
That's what I said

WHAT'S BUSH GOT TO DO WITH IT?
The lyrics to this one pretty much speak for themselves.
We hope that when Tina Turner hears it, she likes it!

I'm sitting here and I'm starting to fear
That we've lost our way
The people in power it's making me sour
All the games they play
It's the shit they say
They want to make us pay
And it's hard to believe that it means more than that - oh
What's Bush got to do - got to do with it
What's Bush - just a mouth where lies are spoken
What's Bush got to do - got to do with it
Who needs the law when the law can be broken
It's been just five years - now open your ears
Or can't you see
Cause what's happened since then
Might well spell the end of democracy
It's clear to me - we can't let it be
Got to show that it means more to US than to them - oh
(chorus)
Like to take things in a new direction
But I have to say
Thinking how they stole the last election
It scares me to feel this way - oh
(chorus)

ON DOWNING
Another parody... this time about the infamous Downing Street Memo, which when it surfaced was the first hard evidence that Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld knew that there were probably no WMD's in Iraq. But they wanted to go to war, so they manufactured false evidence to justify it. Lying to the American people and the world to justify starting a war in which thousands of our brave young soldiers are killed and/or wounded? I'd say that was grounds for impeachment, wouldn't you? I'll ask George Benson next time I see him.

They keep their memos locked up tight on Downing
They pay the news to keep them off the air
So when the story hit the street
And I found out the truth had leaked
I really hoped that everyone would care - on Downing

They say they made their case with lies on Downing
The facts were fixed around the policy
So do you think we'd go to war
If we had known all that before
A half a trillion dollars isn't free

They say this news won't last too long on Downing
They'll spin it off and make it go away
But they're dead wrong - I know they are
Cause Bush this time he went too far
And now it's up to US to make him pay - on Downing

The minutes are not hours there on Downing
But now they belong to US all just the same
So now we cannot waste our time
Let there be justice for their crimes
But stop those liars and their crooked game - on Downing

RED STATES/BLUE STATES
We wrote this song after a friend sent me an email after the 2004 election, which contained two maps: one of the pre-Civil War U.S., showing the states and territories that allowed slavery and the ones that did not; and another map showing the red (Republican) states and the blue (Democratic) states after the '04 election. And do you know what? They were a perfect match - with the exception of Ohio (and we know what happened there)! Coincidence? You can look at the maps and decide for yourself at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/ballot/civilwar.asp

Did you know that
The red states used to be the slave states
The blue states used to be the free states
And freedom's where it's at
Did you know that
Conservatives hate the liberals
But liberal stands for freedom
And freedom's where it's at
How this country got so dumb I really can't explain
But we had better smarten up
Or we're headed for a world of pain
Did you know that
they're still calling it democracy
But they're chippin' away at our freedom
And freedom's where it's at
I said freedom freedom
Everybody talk about freedom
I said freedom freedom
Freedom's where it's at
Everybody loves their freedom
And we sure do too
But the kind of freedom they're talking about
Is the freedom to tell US what to do
(1st verse & chorus)

ARLINGTON
We could not in good conscience make a record like this without stopping to think for a moment about the millions who have died to preserve the freedoms we now enjoy. Freedom of speech. Freedom to express our opinions and fight back with our music against those who would conspire to take away those freedoms, even while they try to pull the wool over our eyes and convince US that we are still free, that we just need to give up a little bit more of our freedom, every time just a little bit more... because we are fighting this never-ending "war on terror"! But let us honor our fallen heroes. We hope and believe that they gave their lives for the real values of America - Truth... Justice... Equality... Individual Rights...not what the people in power today have made it represent!

Oh say can you hear
Beneath the white crystal snow
Through the soft crunch of my footsteps
Unheard below are the songs of my heroes
Silently dreaming
In the whispering wind
Sometimes I hear them singing
There's a bright light in my eyes
Reflecting off the rushing river
The wall resounds the names
The artillery proclaims
In the field there is an unknown cry
I've heard that hollow sound
Oh say, oh say, oh say
Can you hear my song
Arlington?

WITH GOD ON OUR SIDE
Bob Dylan wrote this song in 1963. We updated it with three new verses that bring it into a more modern perspective. With the world in such turmoil over its various religious differences, we thought it would never be more appropriate than today. Everyone thinks they have God on their side these days! And do they? I'm not qualified to say. My personal suggestion: Ask a Buddhist.

Oh my name it is nothing
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the U.S.
I was raised and brought up there
Its laws to abide
That this land that we live in
Has God on its side

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalry charged
And the Indians fell
The cavalry charged
And the Indians died
Oh this country was young then
With God on its side

Oh the Spanish-American
War had it's day
And the Civil War too
was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side

Well the First and the Second
World Wars came to ends
We forgave the Germans
And now we are friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too have
God on their side

The Vietnam War
It was my time to go
But like so many of US
I stood up and said no
Cause something was wrong there
You could feel it inside
The Vietnamese then
Had God on their side

So now we're a nation
At permanent war
I can't help but wonder
Just what it's all for
Are we killing for freedom
Or is freedom what's died
We should know the answer
If God's on our side

This song we are singing
That was written by one
If destiny's choice is
That by millions is sung
One thing we can see is
From the facts you can't hide
Only truth and justice
Have God on their side

BAD NEWS
It does seem that just about all the news you see or read these days is bad,
doesn't it? Well, we're sick of it too! Let's hope that one day pretty soon
somebody will tell US something good!

I don't wanna hear no more bad news
Won't somebody tell me something good
No more hunger - no more war
Nobody's afraid to walk the streets anymore
No more murder - no more crime
Everything and everyone will be just fine - no
(chorus)
Tell me about the time that you walked in the sun by the ocean
The time that your heart filled with soul and emotion
The time that somebody did something to make you smile
Tell me about the time you discovered that love was the answer
When happiness slipped through your arms like a dancer
Something to ease my mind - to let me stop the pain
(chorus)
No more evil there's no more lies
Everyone be living underneath sunny skies
No more anger and no more hate
Won't somebody tell me that it's not too late
(chorus)
Tell me about the time you imagined a world without hatred
The time that you learned only kindness was sacred
The time that somebody did something to open your brain
Tell me about the dreams that you had that you learned to believe in
The gambles you made where you still came out even
Something to ease my mind - to let me stop the pain
(chorus)

GONNA GET WORSE (BEFORE IT GETS BETTER)
Well, we hate to say it, but given the world situation...who can argue with that??

Everybody's talking about all the terrorist attacks
No place is safe from danger and you can't escape the facts
World politics and hunger and incurable disease
I wish someone could answer one small question for me please
How can we find our way
Got to believe it's gonna be a better day
They're making plans for World War III
And they're turning up the heat
Or you might get caught in a sniper's sights
While you're walking down the street
Pollution and corruption overpopulation too
I like to think it's gonna be OK cause there's nothing I can do
How can we find our way
Got to believe it's gonna be a better day
It's gonna get worse before it gets better
And it's getting worse right now
It's gonna get worse before it gets better
But it's gotta get better somehow
As a billion souls cry out in pain
In their struggle to be free
From a world of hate and ignorance with no equality
The power and the money are the rulers of the game
You might want to wish for yesterday
Cause tomorrow won't be the same
(chorus)
It's gonna get worse before it gets better
And it's getting worse by far
It's gonna get worse before it gets better
And it doesn't matter where you are
It's gonna get worse!

THE END OF THE
This song was actually recorded back in 1987 by my band in New York,
The Negatives. The track has held up pretty good. And it just seemed to fit perfectly into this particular spot in "GLOBAL WARNING". I mean, if we are all headed for total annihilation, we might as well have a good time doing it, right?

I see the signs from day to day
It's gonna happen just like they say
So what's the use to believe in God
To play the game or to work too hard
The end would come the prophets said
They who kill would soon be dead
No way to come out smelling like a rose
All I know is when the whole thing blows
I want to be there - I want to be there
I want to be there for the end of the
I want to be there - I want to be there
I want to be there for the end of the
It's no big deal if I live or die
Cause when it goes it's gonna go sky high
I'll see the colors flying all around me
And all the people trying to flee
It'll be the event of the year
And I'll just sit back drinking a beer
And feel the heat burning up all around
And watch the city crumble down to the ground
(chorus)
Still, don't it feel kind of nice to know
We'll all be together when we go
There's not much you or I can do
At least we got something to look forward to
It's gonna be cookin' round here real soon
A barbecue you can see from the moon
It's got to be an incredible thrill
To put a billion baby burgers on the nuclear grill
(chorus) UH-OH!

RUN FOR PRESIDENT
Yeee-ha! That's what we need us in the White House! Another good ol' boy!
Yes-siree Bob! Or is it... Jeb??

I saved up all my money but it wasn't enough
To do the thing that I most love
So my mama and my papa sold all their property
Cause they knew how much it meant to me
I loaded up the pickup and I bid them farewell
I promised I would pay back every cent
All of the money would be well spent
I'm gonna run for president!
I'm gonna run run run
I'm gonna run run run
I'm gonna run for president (repeat)
I'll run on a platform on which everyone will agree
I'll explain to them exactly where it's at
And everybody all across the land will vote for me
Be they Republican or Democrat!
(chorus)
I'll have a hootenanny in the White House when I win
And everyone be welcome to come in
And when I sing and play my banjo
It will be evident
There ain't no better man for President!
(chorus)

ALL WE HAVE IS LOVE
The Beatles said it back in 1969: "All You Need Is Love". We would like to think that this song is another perspective on that idea. Look at what is going on in the world today. War. Poverty. Exploitation. Religious hatred. Yes. Religion, which is supposed to teach human beings how to be good and kind to each other, has turned out to be just another way to create animosity between people and cultures. Seriously, is religion the answer to the world's problems in the 21st century? With everyone thinking they have a monopoly on the truth? That their way is God's only true way? I will admit: ignorance is bliss. And thinking that one has all the answers is definitely more comfortable than realizing that the really big questions of existence are basically unanswerable. But there is a clue to be found in this realization: all we have is love.

Our time is coming - our day is almost here
I've always thought that the only thing to fear
Is giving up the things we dream of
Believing God is up above
When all we have is love
All we have is love

The music keeps on playing - there's no one we can trust
And all the words are saying this world is so unjust
But somewhere out there in the dark
If we can touch each other's heart
It's got to be enough
All we have is love

If the world could see like you and me
The way that life was meant to be
We could all be free to share this dream of love - love

Rainbows are for chasing after
The world was made to fill with laughter
Think of what we'd realize
If we could open up our eyes

Don't let illusion become the things you see
In this confusion the truth will set you free
Imagination travels far
It doesn't matter where you are
It's what you're dreaming of
All we have is love
